First off, apologies to the 90% of my flist who've friended me not for anything in Chinese, Korean or Japanese. In my defense, it is summer and all the shows I normally watch are on hiatus.

Watching all these Asian shows made me have a few questions. I know Mandarin and Cantonese are two different languages, even though they use the same symbols. But are they different merely in the way they pronounce things, or how? Are they like Russian and Ukrainian, where if you speak one, you can get the gist of the other, or are they like Arabic ( Read more... )

I have a fandom confession to make: I like Doctor Who but don't love it. I enjoyed it when SciFi was running it, but when the season ended, I was perfectly content to wait until fall when it would start airing the new one. No great desire for torrents. Yes, I am quite behind. I love hanging out with our houseguests but I so just want to ditch and watch more Mars. This is a write-up on eps 9, 10, and 11 which is as far as I'd gotten (I've done huge write ups on Mars eps before so I am trying not to replicate, but I largely don't remember what I'd covered or not so sorry for any repetition).

Mmmmm. I LOVE ep 3 of Mars. I do find it really cool how Ling brings QL out of her isolation: she feels comfortable enough with him to tell him something is none of his business (on the roof.
